Christmas in July

Spencer hates Christmas. He became a vampire during that time of year, back in 1955, and was so traumatized that he’s still triggered by anything that reminds him of it. He’s aware of this and will isolate himself more than normal whenever Christmastime approaches, to avoid being set off.

Unfortunately, stores like to shove Christmas in people’s faces as soon as possible anymore. (I sometimes come across whole aisles’ worth of holiday items during the summer.) If Spencer runs into such things when he’s not expecting it…uh…

Jay's able to help tame Spencer, whenever one of these outbursts happen, at the very least. This is obviously a lot of fun for Jay. (Sorry, Jay.)

Spencer and Jay are the main characters in a horror comic I'm developing. There will also be a prequel about Spencer's path to vampirism, 'cause that's just how my muse rolls.

    1. Jay's fault for integrating himself into Spencer's (un)life in the first place! XD

  2. LOL! I love it. Such a fun character convention/dynamic. Thankfully we haven't seen any Christmas out yet, but I expect it to happen any day now.

  3. Hehehe! I think maybe Spencer ought to avoid stores from August through January! And yeah, I've seen Christmas stuff at the store already.

    1. Thanks, Sandra! I was just at a store where, like, 1/3rd of it was Christmas. Spencer would've gone ballistic. LOL.

  8. Well, if you think about it, it's kinda fitting. I mean, the reason the advertisements and hype about Christmas start so early is so businesses can suck the maximum amount of money from our bank accounts. :)

    Sounds like a cool cartoon.

  10. What a fun idea to have a character so upset by Christmas! And, like you mentioned, it's practically impossible to ignore that holiday with the stores, TV, radio, and street decorations. I see plenty of triggers in Spencer's future. lol

    1. LOL, yeah, endless triggers! Spencer would normally hide out during this time of year, but...well...Jay likes dragging him places. XD

    1. That sounds fun! They should never invite someone like Spencer to one of those parties, though... :P

  13. Even as a semi-fanatical lover of Christmas I get tired of seeing it prematurely in stores, but that's true for any holiday. Second favorite to Christmas is Halloween, but it still drove me mad to see Petsmart have their Halloween stuff out in July. Often times I fall for this and buy something SUPER early, but this year I resisted. And unfortunately it meant that when I was there last week and it was a slightly more realistic time to buy a Halloween collar for my cat, it would just so happen that Petsmart had already phased out their Halloween stuff for Christmas. Like, really?!?! I can't even with stores anymore.

That aside, I love Spencer's hissing in this... and Jay's panicked "Oh, shit! Escape!" face. The dynamic between these two is always entertaining, but I imagine maybe even more so during Christmas when Spencer's especially cranky. ;)

    1. I don't have a problem with stores stocking up on holiday items early--I like to buy things ahead of time to avoid stress--but I do think they should ease into it more gradually. And I agree, Christmas shouldn't overshadow Halloween when neither are even close to being here yet. Sorry your local Petsmart was such a disappointment like that! It's crazy how Christmas-obsessed stores are anymore...

And thanks! I can't wait to reach Christmastime in the actual webcomic. I have too much fun showing how unhinged he gets during that time of year... XD

  14. I feel for Spencer! I think that's annoying for most people, let alone if you suffered a traumatic event at Christmas. November-ish is the earliest I prefer to think about it...

  15. Well then, about October Spencer's in for it. Santa starts appearing before Halloween these days. Sorry, Spence!
