Killing Darlings, But Keeping Dorklings

You guys remember that one horror webcomic I’ve been developing? Well, I finally had to admit to myself that the reason why it’s been so hard to plot is because many of the characters aren’t meant to be part of this plot. So, I’ve extracted most of the main cast, with plans to give them their own series in the future. This horror webcomic will focus primarily on Spencer and Jay now.

Spencer’s obviously ecstatic about the news…

(Sorry, Spencer. You’re stuck with Jay for life…and now that you two are the stars, hundreds of comic strips, too. Deal.)

  1. Hahaha poor Spencer. Can't wait to know more about these two!

    Love the background effect btw!

    1. Thanks! Spencer and Jay are a lot of fun. Wish I could share more about them already, but I'm waiting until their story is more fully-formed in my head!

And LOL, that background totally happened by accident, while I was messing around with different Photoshop features. Not sure if I'd ever be able to pull it off again! XD

  2. Poor Spencer! I think he's wondering why he couldn't be placed in a different comic... one more Jay-less. Heh.

    1. LOL, probably. These two have shared a story arc in my head for over a decade already, though, so...he shouldn't exactly be surprised! XD

  3. I don't know if Spencer is more concerned about Jay, or the "horror" part of his comics fate... lol. Sounds scary.

    1. Jay and his inability to respect personal space probably horrify Spencer more than the genuine horror elements, to be honest! ;)

  4. Heather, it's so much fun to mess with your characters. Although I know the beginning from the end when I begin a novel, I don;t know what's going to happen to the characters. Some begin with a minor role then end up as a supporting character worthy of an Emmy. Of course, I kill off as many as I can. Because I love to mess with my characters.

    1. Killing characters is definitely fun! I'm more fond of making mine deal with fates worse than death, though, whenever the story allows it... ;)

  5. I just love those two! They're obviously opposites and will have plenty to disagree about - and conflict is the basis of any good story. Good luck! :)

    1. Thanks! These two will have a lot of reasons to butt heads, for sure. It's a fun dynamic to play with! :)

    1. Thanks, Christine! I can't seem to stop drawing these two, so more art of them will likely be popping up here! ;)

    1. These two have been in my head for over a decade, so I didn't exactly find them. Just dusted 'em off a little, LOL.

    2. A decade? Really? So I shouldn't feel guilty for not writing about a new character that's in my head about three months, I guess. :)

    3. LOL, yeah, three months don't seem quite so long in comparison! ;) These two characters were from a book series I wrote back in high school. I'm pretty much trashing everything about it so they can have some new webcomic adventures, haha.

  11. LOL! Their contrasts are awesome. You were suffering from the Dickens infection, eh? (I suffer from that one occasionally--too many characters.)

    1. It wasn't exactly a case of having too many characters. (I only cut three from the current incarnation of the story, LOL.) It was more of a case of me not knowing what to do with those characters. Since I already had a good sense of Jay and Spencer's arc, though, they got to stay. XD

  12. Love the expressions! And, poor Nicholas in Echo Effect - I've been following along his journey and he's having a tough time these days.

  13. Sometimes the characters we want just don't fit.
Sorry I missed this. I was out of town for a few days last week.

    1. I haven't premiered it yet, and likely won't be able to for at least another year or two, which is probably why you're not familiar with it, LOL. I have posted a few pieces of concept art over the past year, though! (Those can be found in the "projects in development" tag.)
