Where is My Mind?

I’ve been listening to a lot of violin music lately, which has caused Fritz—the protagonist of my unfinished WIP Cruel Melody—to get chatty. (He’s a violinist…amongst other things.) Of all the songs I've been listening to, Vitamin String Quartet’s cover of the Pixies song “Where is My Mind?” easily feels the most like Fritz’s mindset to me:

Long story short, I’ve been tinkering with CM for the first time in months. I haven’t written any new scenes yet, and kind of fear when I’ll have to, since I lost my love of novel-writing last year, but at least now it seems less likely that CM will end up in my graveyard of projects...

  1. Interesting cover. Keep at it with your WIP, I'm sure you'll find your groove!

    1. I hope so! It's been strange working on it again. July was the last time I worked on it properly, I think!

  2. You'll get back into the swing of it, I think. I had to take a long break with my latest WIP and it felt foreign when I sat down with it again. But I pushed through it, and then fell in love and finished it. Such an emotional process, writing is. :) By the way, lovely song!

    1. I'm doubtful I'll learn to love novel-writing again, but I really want to finish this WIP, so hopefully the love I've always felt for this story will help me finish it despite that...

    1. I never stopped loving this story, but I did grow to hate novel-writing in general last year, so...it'll be interesting to see what happens once it's time for me to write new scenes for this!

  4. It's always nice when something inspires you to think of an old manuscript. I hope you find the love for the story again!

    1. I've always loved this story, but novel-writing in general...not so much anymore! This WIP has been fun to revise, but I'm not looking forward to writing new scenes for it. I haven't done anything like that for months!

  5. Cool! I think that should be my theme song - "Where's my mind"!

    1. LOL! This could easily be everyone's theme song, I think, since I doubt anyone can keep tabs on their mind at all times! XD

  6. It's great to hear you're writing again - I hope it all goes well and that you rediscover your love of novel-writing!

    1. I really don't think I'll be falling in love with novel-writing again. It just doesn't connect with who I am as a storyteller anymore. After revising the first 16 chapters, it's finally time for me to write something new for CM, and I just feel so UGH about it. :/

    2. Mmm...well if you don't feel that enthusiastic about it, I'd say put it aside for now and get on with something you love. Then again, maybe you've lost some of your enthusiasm for the project because of the revision process. I've done so much revising on my last two WIPs that I can hardly stand to look at them anymore, so I know what that feels like!

What I've learned lately is that it's important to go with your gut feeling - to work on what you want to work on and not on what you think you should be working on. I find that if I'm enthusiastic about a project, I'll be more likely to do my best work. Anyway, hope you figure it out soon! : )

    3. Thanks! Funnily enough, I've always preferred revisions over writing, so getting to edit CM this past week was actually fun for me. Then it was time to write, and...well... XD

I definitely won't be forcing it if it's not coming naturally to me. I've returned to working fully on my art and comics in the meantime. It'd be nice to finish CM eventually, though. So much of it is already completed, and it'd be really nice to finish it in this format instead of converting it into a webcomic or something...
