Guest Post: "Writing Meira Harper"

Today, I am pleased to say that I am part of the blog tour for Christine Rains’ latest 13th Floor book! (Is this your first time hearing about this series? Read the first book for free over on Smashwords and Kobo now!) You can find Christine’s guest post below, all about developing the harpy Meira Harper, the protagonist in The Harbinger!

by Christine Rains

The idea for Meira was born from random brainstorming for a blog post I did a while back. I mentioned a harpy challenging Zeus for the soul of the man she loves as a hook for a unique paranormal romance. My readers jumped on the idea and told me I should write that story. Ta-da!

Meira didn't come to me that easily, though. As my mind played with the various stories in the 13th Floor series, hers was the one that I knew little about. I knew what she was going to do and why, but I didn't know Meira. Who is this brave woman, er, I mean, harpy?

She's not an ugly, screeching beast, but beautiful and graceful even with her wings and bird feet. Ah yes, those feet. Meira doesn't like them one bit. She has a bit of a fetish for shoes and cute human feet. So she's not fully comfortable with her natural form. Something a lot of us can relate to. There's always something we don't like about our bodies.

As a servant of Zeus, Meira fetches souls and other things for him. It's a nice job since she gets to spend the majority of her life in the Middle Realm (a.k.a. Earth), and she has a lot of free time to obsess about shoes and her sweetheart. She's loyal to Zeus even when he lays claim to the soul of Sam Wright, her love. A sense of integrity is always important to gain the reader's respect.

The Greek gods aren't the most benevolent of deities. Meira can't find any help amongst them. She also can't betray them. Being turned into a poodle is the least of her worries. Meira has to dig deep within and find the strength to carry on even when she might not get that happy ending for herself. Her love for Sam keeps her going. I have immense sympathy for her purity of motivation.

Meira's as clear in my mind as any of my other characters now. She's even demanding her own shoe closet! Yep, a character starts off as a spark of an idea, and then they're taking up all the extra room. I needed that space for random trivia!

Title: 1304 – The Harbinger (The 13th Floor series, #4)
Author: Christine Rains
Genre: paranormal romance
Release date: March 13th, 2013

Meira Harper loves both her jobs: talking about beautiful shoes and fetching souls for Zeus. But the Thunder God threatens the harpy's loyalty to her job when she receives the call to bring the soul of gorgeous Sam Wright. Meira pleads with her boss to let him live. Zeus agrees, but Sam must fight for his life. If Sam can win three challenges, he can keep his soul.

The gods never play fairly, though, so Meira needs to find ways to help Sam with the challenges. She cannot outwardly cross her master, but she refuses to let the man she loves lose his soul. They haven't even had a chance to start a life together.

Sam's soul is on the line. Meira's will be too if she's caught, but that's a risk she's willing to take.
